January 2009 News: The heat is on (but it’s cold in New Jersey)

Bran is now 10 months old, and starting to become serious about her sheep. During the last quarter of 2008, we didn’t work much, which was just right for Bran, who wasn’t quite ready yet for training. We were mostly just getting her comfortable with the sheep, giving her some time on and off. I had been planning to mostly have our instructor work her, as his good timing would help her to feel the right things faster (by him being in the right place and reacting to the situation in a way that made the right things more obvious for her). While I enjoy the sense of accomplishment for what I can do training my dogs, I mainly feel that I’m just not a good enough handler to communicate the right things to a newly-starting dog. I prefer that the dog be started the right way, as it’s so much easier to form good habits from the beginning than it is to fix bad habits later! The plan changed when my instructor tore a tendon in his knee and needed surgery; now the heat is on and starting the puppy is up to me!.

Bran, New Year’s Day 2009After a few weeks of working her, I feel a little more comfortable, but I have a long way to go to improve my timing. She’s progressing well in spite of me, and after one of our weeks off, she came back noticeably more serious. I’m working on getting her more comfortable going to the left, and starting to build the outrun (from just a few feet or yards away).
